The Union Canal links the heart of Edinburgh to the Falkirk Wheel, via a wonderfully rural 32 mile route. This features Scotland’s only canal tunnels, dramatic aqueducts and peaceful scenery – perfect for walking or cycling. There’s a cycle hire centre near the start in Edinburgh.

The Forth & Clyde Canal continues the journey west for another 36 miles, past a series of 39 locks, all the way to the coast.

Directions:
Union Canal: Edinburgh Quay, off Commercial Street on A199, near Leith Forth & Clyde Canal. From east, follow signs for M9, take junction 8 onto M876, then junction 1. From west, follow signs for M80, take junction 5 onto M876, then first exit.
